Kanchenjunga lies in the border between eastern Nepal and north-eastern India. A part of this mountain lies in Nepal and a part in India. Thus, we can say that it lies in both the countries. Gaining an altitude of 8586m above the sea level, the mountain is the third highest peak in the world after Everest and K2 Mountain. Mt.Kanchenjunga lies about 125km east-south-east of Mount Everest. Mt. Kanchenjunga is also a part of great Himalayan range. The name ‘Kanchenjunga’ means the five treasures of snow in Tibet language which symbolizes the five major peaks of the region but according to the local people the five treasures represents salt, gold, turquoise and special stone , scared scriptures, grain and medicine and many more.
The first successful ascent of the mountain was done in 25 May 1955 by George Brand and Joe Brown. Krzysztof Wielicki and Jerzy Kukuczka in January 11, 1986 did the first winter ascent. Till now 40 people have lost their lives attempting to summit Kanchenjunga. The death rate before 1990 was 37% which has been decreased to 4.4% according to a study of 1990-2003. Mt.Kanchenjunga has four climbing routes three (South West, North West and North East) from Nepal and one (North East Sikkim) from India. The North East climbing routes has been banned by Indian government since 2000 and it has only three successful summits. The west climbing routes are more popular than the east ones.
Along with its majestic beauty, Kanchenjunga is a home for more than 250 species of birds and wildlife with high mountain lakes in Olangchunggola. It has rich variations of flora and Fauna. 30 variations of Rhododendron and 69 variations of Orchids can be found in this region with nations 20 indigenous gymnosperms and 15 endemic flowering plants. Though, because of its remote location from Nepal and difficulty in accessing from India, this region is not so popular among the trekkers. One can explore the pristine beauty of the nature visiting the Kanchenjunga region with the expedition of worlds 3rd highest summit.
