Overview of Hidden Valleys of Nar and Phu

This is one of the short, easy and new treks in the north of Annapurna region close of Nepal Tibet border. The trek goes through the off beaten path crossing challenging high pass of Kang La and Thorang La. The trek is ideal for all those adventure lovers who want to explore the remote and isolated areas of Annapurna region far from the hustle and bustle of the main trekking trail.

The trail starts from Bhulbhule following the Marshyangdi River valley in the north through the terraced fields to the village of Koto which is situated behind the Annapurna massif. Leaving the popular trail towards the Annapurna foothills, we will trek through the deep and narrow valley to the formerly restricted area of Nar Khola Valley. Trekking in this area is different in comparison most of other trails in Nepal, which goes through wild, barren and isolated terrain similar to Tibet. The trails here are rough and at some portion cut into side of the cliff.

We will spend the days discovering the area and visiting the isolated villages of Nar and Phu and crossing Kang La pass. Later the trail rejoins the Marshyngdi River Valley at Humde, where we will catch a flight back to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu.

Only the Hindu’s can visit the temple, but the visitors can clearly see the temple and activities performed in the temple premises from the eastern bank of Bagmati River where the dead bodies are cremated. From here we will visit Boudhanath Stupa which is located 8km east of Kathmandu. Boudhanath stupa is dome shaped monument representing the mind of Buddha and pilgrimage destination for Tantric Buddha. From here we will proceed to Kathmandu Durbar Square which is the historic seat of Nepalese royalty. Here we will visit Kastamandap Temple (a temple rumored to be constructed from the wood of single tree), Taleju temple, statue of Kal Vairab, Basantapur palace and Kumari Temple (residence of living goddess Kumari).  After this we will pay our visit to Swoyambhunath temple which is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates back to 2500years and is situated in the hilltop offering the astonishing view of Kathmandu. Return back to hotel for overnight stay.

Early in the morning we will take a ride to Bhulbhule which is the starting point of the trek. En route we will take our lunch in Dumre where we will take a turn off the main road to Pokhara and head north to the town of Besisahar.

After a short descent we will again follow the river valley to Syange(1136m) where we will stop to have lunch. After having lunch we will follow the vertical cliff above the river to Jagat, which is a Tibetan village serving customs post on the old trading route from Tibet.

Elevation

From Jagat the altitude climbs up and the vegetation changes to Rhododendron and Pine forest and the valley becomes narrower and steeper. We will cross the river on a large suspension bridge and the trail ascends steeply, with the river flowing through maze of large boulders. After reaching at the top of the cliff the valley widens up and reveals the village of Tal which is situated in the midst of barley, wheat and potatoes field. After Tal we will enter the district of Manang where we take lunch in one of the lodge. In the afternoon we will continue the walk following the river valley crossing back to the west bank and then climbing up to our camping site in Dharapani.

Elevation
1890

Leaving Dharapni behind us the valley widens to the west through the pristine forest of Fir and Pine. After a half an hour of walk we will reach Bagarchap(2160m) which is the first village of the trek with characteristic Tibetan architecture. The village is the transition between lower wet valleys and higher dry arid area of Manang valley. The village offers the mind-boggling panorama of Lamjung himal, Annapurna II and Annapurna III up the valley and Manaslu and Peak 29 down the valley. After Bagarchap the trail crosses a small wooden bridge beside a waterfall and ascend to Latamarang(2360m). In Koto we will complete the formalities at police checkpoint and cross the suspension bridge to follow Nar Phu Khola through the forested and narrow valley. The trail here becomes off beaten and rewards with stunning scenic beauty. The walk through the small narrow valley is one of the most thrilling and beautiful experience of the trek. A fine combination of oak, bamboo and rhododendron forest, steep cliffs towering for hundreds meters above the trail and a series of suspension bridges makes this day of the trip a more fascination one. After having the lunch near one of the suspension bridge we will continue the walk following the river to Dharmasala. From here the trail gradually goes uphill to the remote village of Meta, situated in the lap of Kanguru Himal(6981m). Such as to get adapted with the rising altitude, today we will walk slowly; as there is much to see and enjoy. The trail winds around the arid hillside which is distinguished from the lush vegetation of Annapurna circuit. The arid and barren landscape around Phu Khola valley seems like that of Tibet. The bamboo trees are replaced by juniper and occasional fir.

From Meta the trail opens into the valley at Chakku(3560m)and then following the right hand side of the valley we will trek to Jhunum(3580m) which offers one of a kind of strata of the cliffs. We will take our lunch here by the river and then ascend to the deserted village and fields of Lower Chhaku which is the former home to Khampa people from Tibet. Later the trail goes through a tributary valley and descends to a small river and climbs up to our camping site in Kyang.

Elevation
3820

From Kyang the trail goes through the fabulously carved route into the cliffs to Phu. The remote village of Phu is located in the opposite side of the valley offers the spectacular Mountain View. The houses here are built from stone. We will camp just by the side of the river. The afternoon is free so we can relax or explore.

To get adapted with the rising altitude we will take a rest at the village of Phu. In the afternoon we can explre Tashi and Samdu Choling Monasteries along with the village. The area has small teahouse where we can try Tibetan tea or the Rakshi( local brew). The village is near to Tibetan border and an optional walk to Layju Khola is highly recommended for astonishing view of mountains and Phu village.

From Phu we will retrace our path down the valley to Kyang where we will have our lunch and continue the trek to our camping site in Chakku.

Witnessing the superb Mountain View we will start the day’s trip. The trail goes through the suspension bridge, furiously galloping snow fed rivers and vegetative land to the entrance of Nar Valley. Beyond the series of Mani walls and stupa the trail reveals the first view of Nar Valley. We will arrive by afternoon for lunch so in the remaining day is free of exploration. Nar has quite a number of monasteries that worth a visit. The people living here seem to be more outgoing and vivacious in comparison of Phu.

Elevation
4130

Enjoying ecstatic scenic beauty and wild panorama we will continue the trek. We will start the walk heading west out of the village and gradually going uphill to wide Ghatte Khola Valley. At the back of us is the stunning peak of Kanguru and in front is Chulu Range. After having our lunch in Ponpha Khol we will start making steep climb towards Kang La Pass. As we climb up through the meandering trail there are astonishing view of Kanguru, ManaslU, Peak29 and Hiunchuli. We will set our camp just below the pass in a finest location in the lap of snow clad Himalayas.

Elevation
5090

From our camping site we will start with a steep uphill climb through well defined trail to Kang La pass (5310m) which is denoted by prayer flags. The top of the pass grants the panorama of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Himal and Gangapurna along with many others. This series of peaks above the altitude of 7000m form a fence and act as a rain shadow area in the north. From the pass the trail descents down all the way to valley floor. Today we will descent nearly up to 2000m to the village of Ngawal where we will stop the day’s walk.

Elevation

Today is a short day in case we need extra time as a contingency day due to snow at Kang La pass. From Ngawal the trail descend to Marshyangdi River valley and cross the river on a small bridge. Stay overnight at lodge.
