This is a 27 day trek that goes through The Great Himalaya Trail from Kanchanjunga Base Camp to Tumlingtar in the Makalu region. Kanchanjunga with the altitude of 8,586m is the third highest mountain peak in the world and Makalu with the altitude of 8481m is the fifth highest peak.
Kanchanjunga with its seven major peaks is an extremely furious and unpredictable mountain bordering the eastern Nepal but, Makalu is a four sided pyramid lying within the Makalu Barun National Park, bordered by Sagarmatha National Park to the west and Arun River to the east.
We are also running a trek that goes to Makalu Base Camp and Kanchanjunga Base Camp. Both of these trek goes through the first portion of The Great Himalayan Trail, which is completed by few other trekking groups.
The trip begins with a short exploration around the Kanchanjunga which offers the magnificent view of Tent peak, Nepal peak, Cross peak and then the regal Kanchanjunga itself. From Pangpema the trek goes to Ghunsa where we will cross the Nango La pass(4820m) and enter into the remote valley of Yangma and then to a stunning hamlet of Olangchungola.
Leaving Olangchungola behind us we will cross Lumba Sumba (5160m) and trek to the village of Chyantang. Chyantang is a unique village inhibited by Lhomi ethnic group which follow Buddhism combined with Shamanism. There are few other villages in upper Arun valley which have Lhomis ethnic people.
From Chyantang we will trek to Tumlingtar heading out to the south towards airstrip where our trip comes to an end.
As soon as you land on the Tribhuwan International Airport our representative will pick you and transfer to the hotel. In the evening there will be briefing about the trek.
Today we will prepare ourselves both the physically and mentally for the trek. Today we will make the arrangement of the permits as well.
Early in the morning take a 50min flight to Bhadrapur which is situated in the eastern lowlands of Terai. From Bhadrapur we will drive for around 5-6hours to a scenic hill-station of Ilam.
Early in the morning we will catch a ride to the scenic settlement of Taplejung via Phidim and Ranke. We will be driving throughout the foot of densely forested hills along with pristinely nestled settlements. Stay overnight at lodge in Taplejung.
Leaving Taplejung behind us, today we will commence the trek to Jogidanda. Stay overnight in tented camp.
We will continue our walk up through Tamur River in a valley to a pleasant bazaar at Chirwa which has few teahouses and shops.
Continuing our walk up to Tamur passing Tapethok and crossing Simbuwa Khola which is formed by Yalung glacier we will climb over the ridge to Dhunsa Khola valley and ultimately to our camping site in Sekathum.
Making our way through the steep and narrow trail above the river; we will continue walking watching magnificent view of Ghunsa Khola below us. After this path descends steeply, which ultimately lead us to camping our site in the mountainside village of Amjilossa.
From Amjilossa the trail continuously goes up through the Ghunsa Khola to Kyapar which is nestled between the terraced hills.
From Kyapar the trail descends and later climbs up through the right bank of Ghunsa Khola to the village of Phere. From Phere the trail enters into the Rhododendron forest and gently climbs before descending back to Ghunsa Khola where we will cross the river and reach the village of Ghunsa.
Today we will stay in Ghunsa to get acclimatized with the rising altitude and enjoy the beauty of the area.
Today we will walk through grassy field and a Rhododendron forest with a glimpse of Jannu glacier and a view of Jannu Himal, Kumbakarna Himal and south face of Kanchanjunga to our camping site in Kambachen.
We rest a day such as to get acclimatized with the rising altitude and preparing ourselves for the upcoming walk. We too can enjoy the explore the surrounding scenic beauty.
From Kambachen the trail continues to be rocky along the terraced slpes. Today we will trek up to the edge of Kanchanjunga glacier and crossing Lhonak Glacier we will arrive to our camping site in Lhonak. Lhonak offers the magnificent view of Mera Peak.
Making our way out of Lhonak, today we will walk along the hill on the right bank of Glacier witnessing the magnificently regal peaks of Kanchanjunga. From here one can see Kanchanjunga I and II, Kumbakarna Himal, Nepal peak, Jongsang, Tent peak and Lopsangla glaciers.
Crossing the two passing Lopsang la (5315m) and Mirgin La (4700m) we will trek down to Ghunsa.
We will retrace our path back to Chilchila which takes around 5hours. Upon reaching Chilchila we will catch our ride back to Tumlingtar.
We will take a early morning flight back to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar through the Himalayas. Upon arriving Kathmandu we will check into Hotel and in the remaining day we will explore the city.
Today we will start the day by visiting Pashupatinath temple which is situated 5km east of Kathmandu in the bank of holy Bagmati River. Pashupatinath is a pagoda shaped temple with tiered golden roofs and silver doors. Only the Hindu’s can visit the temple, but the visitors can clearly see the temple and activities performed in the temple premises from the eastern bank of Bagmati River where the dead bodies are cremated. From here we will visit Boudhanath Stupa which is located 8km east of Kathmandu. Boudhanath stupa is dome shaped monument representing the mind of Buddha and pilgrimage destination for Tantric Buddha. . In the afternoon we will drive to Patan Durbar Square which is situated in the southern area of the city. The square is dotted with ancient palaces, temples and shrines which are known for their antique and exquisite carvings. From here we will proceed to Kathmandu Durbar Square which is the historic seat of Nepalese royalty. Here we will visit Kastamandap Temple (a temple rumored to be constructed from the wood of single tree), Taleju temple, statue of Kal Vairab, Basantapur palace and Kumari Temple (residence of living goddess Kumari). After this we will pay our visit to Swoyambhunath temple which is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates back to 2500years and is situated in the hilltop offering the astonishing view of Kathmandu. Return back to hotel for overnight stay.
You will be transferred to Tribhuwan International airport for your onward journey
