Voltage & Frequency

Nepal operates on 220–240 volts at 50 Hz (cycles per second). This is similar to most of Europe and Asia but different from North America (110–120 volts) and some other regions.

Plug Types

Sockets in Nepal typically accept:

  • Three round pins (commonly used in India & Sri Lanka) — both small and large sizes.
  • In some places, you may also find two round pins (European style).

It’s best to carry a universal plug adapter to ensure compatibility.

Tip: Bring a Universal Adapter & Converter

  • If your device does not support 220–240V, you will also need a voltage converter.
  • Many modern electronics (like laptops & phone chargers) are already dual-voltage, but always check the label.
  • A universal adapter with a surge protector is recommended, as voltage fluctuations are common in Nepal.

Power Outages

During dry seasons or in rural areas, power outages (load shedding) may occur, though it has improved significantly in recent years.

  • Most hotels, restaurants, and offices have backup power through fuel generators or batteries.
  • Still, it’s wise to charge your devices whenever you can and carry a power bank.

Quick Checklist for Electricity in Nepal

  • ✅ Universal plug adapter (including large & small round pins)
  • ✅ Voltage converter (if your device is not 220–240V compatible)
  • ✅ Surge protector to prevent damage from fluctuations
  • ✅ Power bank for emergencies

Summary

Nepal’s electricity supply is generally reliable in cities and tourist areas, but being prepared helps avoid inconvenience. Bring the right adapters and converters, and enjoy your trip with all your devices ready to go!
