Mt. Cholatse is a mountain in Khumbu region which is also known as Jobo Lhaptsan. The name Cholatse was formed by the combination of three Tibetan words Cho (which means lake) La (which is pass) and Tse (which means peak).
Thus, the Cholatse Peak literally means ‘the lake pass peak’ and there is a lake below the South of 5,420m pass to the east. The Cholatse peak is connected to Taboche by a long ridge and the Chola glacier descends off the east face.
The Cholatse Mountain can be climbed from both southwest ridge and north face. The Mountain was scaled for the first time via southwest ridge on April 22, 1982 by Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John Roskelley, Bill O’Connor and Peter Hackett. Later on 1984 the north face was successfully scaled. This peak is regarded as one of the toughest peak to climb and requires a lot of technical knowledge about climbing.
