Nepal: The Heart of Himalayan Trekking

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s fourteen mountains above 8,000 metres, and it offers treks for every level of experience. Our best-selling journey is the Everest Base Camp Trek, a 12 to 15 day adventure through the Khumbu, the homeland of the Sherpa people. It follows in the footsteps of Hillary and Tenzing past Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery, and it reaches its high point at Kala Patthar (5,545 m), where you get the most famous close-up view of Everest on Earth. For those who love forests and mountain villages, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes 10 to 13 days. It winds through rhododendron woods, terraced fields and Gurung settlements into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheatre ringed by Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli.

Trekkers looking for a longer classic can choose the Annapurna Circuit Trek, which takes 14 to 18 days. It circles the entire Annapurna massif, crosses the high Thorong La pass at 5,416 metres, and descends to the sacred temple of Muktinath and the deep Kali Gandaki gorge. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is quieter and wilder. Over 14 to 17 days it loops around the world’s eighth-highest mountain, passing Tibetan Buddhist villages and crossing the dramatic Larkya La pass at 5,106 metres. For first-time trekkers and families, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is the perfect introduction. In just four to six days you reach Poon Hill, where a sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna becomes a Himalayan memory you’ll never forget.

Close to Kathmandu, the Langtang Valley Trek takes seven to ten days. It offers warm Tamang hospitality, yak pastures, local cheese factories and wide views from Kyanjin Ri. The Upper Mustang Trek takes travellers into the hidden kingdom of Lo, where the walled city of Lo Manthang, ancient cave dwellings and desert-like canyons feel more like Tibet than Nepal. Because it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, Upper Mustang is also one of the few treks that is excellent during the summer months. Experienced trekkers seeking true wilderness can take on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, an 18 to 22 day expedition into Nepal’s remote far east to the base of the world’s third-highest mountain. For travellers who prefer not to trek, our Nepal Cultural and Wildlife Tour combines the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu Valley, the lakeside charm of Pokhara and jungle safaris in Chitwan National Park.

Tibet: Journey to the Roof of the World

Tibet is a land of turquoise lakes, fluttering prayer flags and centuries-old monasteries. Foreign travellers visit Tibet on guided tours with special permits, and we arrange all the paperwork for you. Our Lhasa City Tour takes four to five days and explores the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism: the majestic Potala Palace, the sacred Jokhang Temple, the bustling Barkhor Street, and the great monasteries of Sera and Drepung. The Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Tour takes eight to ten days. It travels overland across the Tibetan plateau through Gyantse and Shigatse to Rongbuk Monastery, where you get an uninterrupted view of Everest’s north face without a long trek.

For spiritual seekers, the Mount Kailash Kora is one of the most sacred pilgrimages on Earth. Revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and followers of Bön, the three-day walk around Mount Kailash crosses the Drolma La pass at 5,630 metres, and the journey also visits the holy waters of Lake Manasarovar. Adventurers who love the open road can join our Kathmandu to Lhasa Overland Journey, an eight to twelve day crossing from Nepal into Tibet over high passes and through ancient towns, with Everest in view along the way. The best time to visit Tibet is from April to October, while the Kailash season runs from May to September.

Bhutan: The Land of the Thunder Dragon

Bhutan is a carbon-negative kingdom that welcomes visitors through its “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy, which keeps its culture and natural beauty wonderfully preserved. Our Bhutan Cultural Tour takes five to eight days and discovers the valleys of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, with their majestic dzongs, colourful festivals and peaceful countryside. The highlight is the hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang, perched on a cliff about 900 metres above the valley floor. Walkers can join the Druk Path Trek, Bhutan’s most popular short trek. Over six to eight days it links Paro and Thimphu across high ridges and past alpine lakes and ancient temples. For a deeper adventure, the Jomolhari Trek takes eight to eleven days to the base of sacred Mount Jomolhari, through yak herders’ camps and remote highland villages, and it is one of the most scenic treks in the entire Himalaya.

The Grand Himalayan Tour: Three Kingdoms in One Journey

For travellers who want to experience all three countries, our Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan Grand Himalayan Tour brings together the temples of Kathmandu, the palaces of Lhasa and the cliffside monasteries of Bhutan in a single journey of 14 to 18 days. Scenic mountain flights link the three kingdoms, and on clear days they offer views over the highest peaks on the planet. The tour is easy to moderate in difficulty, and it is best enjoyed in spring and autumn.
